Huskers Dominate Day One of Drake Invite



Des Moines, Iowa —The Nebraska women’s tennis team started off on a high note winning each of its five singles matches on the opening day of the Drake Invite.
 
Sophomore Chloe Kuckelman impressively defeated Ines Absisan of Omaha 6-0, 6-1. In the 2020-21 season, Absisan played predominately at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for the Mavericks. 
 
Fellow sophomore Vivien Sandberg also defeated an Omaha Maverick. In straight sets, Sandberg picked up the 6-4, 6-1 win over Lillian Tiemeyer. Last season, Tiemeyer recorded wins in the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions. 
 
Freshmen Jillian Roa and Lucy Loy had a successful first competition as Huskers, winning both of their matches in straight sets. Roa defeated South Dakota’s Jana Lazarevic 6-4, 6-1, and Loy won her matchup against fellow Coyote, Yulia Almiron, 6-3, 7-5. 
 
Rounding out singles play was junior Samantha Alicea with the win against Drake’s Ines Stephanie 6-0, 6-3. 
 
The Nebraska doubles teams went 2-2 in Friday’s opening round of play, as the pairings of Alicia/Kuckelman and Sandberg/Roa both won one set apiece.
