Huskers Women’s Tennis Set to Open Spring Season in California

Lincoln, NE – January 14, 2024: The Nebraska women’s tennis team is gearing up for the start of their 2024 spring season with an away match against UC Riverside on Tuesday, Jan. 16, marking an exciting beginning to what promises to be a highly competitive season.

Anticipation for the Season Opener The match, scheduled for a 3 p.m. (CT) start, will see the Huskers take on the Highlanders in Riverside, California. Fans can stay updated with match progress via @HuskerWTennis on various social media platforms.

Head Coach German Dalmagro expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming season: “I’m really excited to see the team compete, fight for each other, and represent Nebraska well. We have been working very hard in the fall and in the preseason, and I know the team is eager to start competing. It’s been fun to see them trust the process throughout the fall and the start of this spring. The team is committed to being a gritty, tough team, and I can’t wait to see them in action in a couple of days.”

Scouting the Opposition: UC Riverside UC Riverside, the Huskers’ first opponent, is coming off a challenging 2022-23 season, ending with a 2-16 record overall. The Highlanders have already begun their season, facing a tough 7-0 loss against Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 13. With a seasoned roster that includes a blend of upperclassmen and underclassmen, UCR is expected to present a robust challenge to the Huskers.

Series History with UC Riverside The upcoming match will be only the second meeting between the two teams, with Nebraska having won the first encounter back in 2007 with a convincing 6-1 victory.

Nebraska’s Preparations and Expectations The Huskers have been intensively preparing for the spring season, adding strength to their lineup with two transfers – graduate student Maja Pietrowicz and freshman Maria Taranova. Pietrowicz has shown her prowess in both singles and doubles play, while Taranova ended the fall season with impressive singles and doubles records.

Under Coach Dalmagro’s guidance, the team concluded their fall play with a commendable 50-47 singles record. Players like Lucy Loy, Jillian Roa, and Raphaëlle Lacasse have already showcased their talent and will be crucial to the team’s success this spring.

Looking Ahead After the match against UC Riverside, the Huskers will return home to host DePaul on Friday, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m. CT. This home opener is highly anticipated and is expected to be a thrilling encounter.
