Huskers Secure Nail-Biting Victory Over Texas A&M in NCAA Tournament

In a thrilling matchup at Gill Coliseum, the Nebraska women’s basketball team clinched a hard-fought 61-59 victory over Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Logan Nissley and Jaz Shelley emerged as heroes, sinking crucial free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for the Huskers.

Nissley, a standout guard from Bismarck, N.D., led the charge for Nebraska with 16 points, including four pivotal three-pointers that helped the Huskers build an early lead. Her two free throws with just 14.7 seconds remaining gave Nebraska the edge, reclaiming the lead at 60-59 after Texas A&M mounted a fierce comeback to briefly take control of the game.

Shelley also played a pivotal role in securing the victory, adding five points, six assists, and five rebounds against an aggressive Aggie defense. Her free throw with two seconds left extended Nebraska’s lead to two points, while a last-second attempt by Texas A&M fell short, securing Nebraska’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2014 and Coach Amy Williams’ first NCAA Tournament victory at the helm.

With this hard-fought win, the No. 6 seed Huskers improved to 23-11 on the season and advanced to face the third-seeded hosts from Oregon State in the next round. The upcoming showdown against Oregon State promises to be another intense battle, with the game scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. (CT) and televised live nationally by ESPN.

Despite a valiant effort from Texas A&M, led by Aicha Coulibaly’s impressive 26-point performance in the second half, the No. 11 seed Aggies ultimately fell short, ending their season with a 19-13 record.

The Huskers showcased their defensive prowess throughout the game, holding Texas A&M to just 36 percent shooting from the field while also winning the turnover battle. In what proved to be a low-scoring defensive duel in the first half, Nebraska’s resilience and clutch plays down the stretch secured their spot in the next round of the tournament.
