Huskers Ready for Another Upset Bid Against No. 2 Ohio State on Valentine’s Day

The Nebraska women’s basketball team (16-8, 8-5 Big Ten) is aiming for its second straight upset of a top-ranked team when they travel to Columbus to face No. 2 Ohio State (21-3, 12-1 Big Ten) on Wednesday night.

Riding the Wave of Big Wins:

Fresh off their thrilling 82-79 victory over then-No. 2 Iowa, the Huskers are brimming with confidence. Jaz Shelley, who was named both Big Ten Player of the Week and AP National Player of the Week, scored a season-high 23 points including the game-winning three-pointer. Natalie Potts continued her impressive freshman campaign with 14 points and six rebounds, while Alexis Markowski recorded her 14th double-double of the season.

Scouting the Buckeyes:

Ohio State, the Big Ten’s most experienced team, boasts a balanced offense led by Jacy Sheldon (17.6 ppg), Celeste Taylor (9.8 ppg), Rebeka Mikulasikova (9.6 ppg), and Taylor Thierry (11.9 ppg). They lead the Big Ten in steals, turnovers forced, and turnover margin, translating their defense into an explosive offense averaging 80.9 points per game.

Keys to Victory for Nebraska:

  • Contain Jacy Sheldon: Limiting Sheldon’s scoring impact will be crucial. The Huskers’ experienced backcourt, featuring Shelley and Darian White, will need to be disciplined on defense.
  • Rebound Tough: Ohio State may outsize Nebraska, but the Huskers can compete on the boards by outrebounding their opponents like they did against Iowa. Markowski’s presence inside will be key.
  • Shoot Smart: With Ohio State’s aggressive defense, the Huskers must avoid turnovers and capitalize on open shots. Shelley’s playmaking abilities and Potts’s outside shooting will be valuable assets.

History in the Making:

A win over Ohio State would not only be Nebraska’s third victory over a ranked opponent this season, but it would also tie the highest-ranked foe they have ever defeated (No. 2 Baylor in 2005). Additionally, it would solidify their position in the Big Ten standings and boost their NCAA Tournament hopes.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT at Value City Arena. Fans can catch the game on Peacock with Sloane Martin and Kim Adams on the call or listen across the Huskers Radio Network.

Come on, Huskers! Let’s bring home another upset victory!
