Novak Claims Slovenian National Title



Medvode, Slovenia – Nebraska women’s tennis sophomore Kristina Novak won the Slovenian National Championship this week in Medvode, Slovenia. Novak beat Noka Juric 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the title. 

With the championship, she wraps up an impressive year after earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors for the 2020-21 season, while also being named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.

Novak, seeded No. 5, started off competition with two dominating performances, the first against Pika Doberlet, where Novak won 6-2, 6-0. In the second match, she faced Lara Flerin winning 6-3, 6-0.

In the quarterfinals, Novak defeated the No. 1 seed Hana Becirovic-Novak 6-3, 6-0 in route to a semifinal matchup with No. 3 seed Anali Kocevar where Novak continued her undefeated streak with a 7-5, 6-3 win. 

Novak concluded her impressive five straight match wins without dropping a set as she grabbed the title with the two-set win over No. 2 seed Juric in the finals. 

Novak and the Huskers will return to competition when the team hosts the Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m.
