Nebraska at Badger Invite: Saturday Results

The Nebraska men’s tennis team won five of seven singles matches against Minnesota on Saturday, highlighting day three of the Huskers’ competition at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis.

After winning two of three doubles matches against Minnesota on Friday, the Huskers went 5-2 against the Golden Gophers on the singles court Saturday. Junior Victor Moreno Lozano shut out Minnesota’s Jackson Allen in the third set of a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 victory. Junior Brandon Perez, a Virginia Tech transfer, won his first singles match with Nebraska in thrilling fashion. Perez won the first set, 6-3, before Minnesota’s Siim Troost evened the match with a 7-5 win in set two. The third set went to a tiebreaker, with Perez claiming the 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) victory. Sophomore Albert Sprlak-Puk was also a three-set winner Saturday, defeating Dylan Heap, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Chester Wickwire dropped the first set of his match against Kaleb Dobbs, before rallying for the Huskers’ fourth three-set victory of the match. Wickwire was a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 winner. Junior Patrick Cacciatore swept Minnesota’s Bodin Zarkovic, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Nebraska also played three doubles matches against Indiana on Saturday, dropping all three to a Hoosier team that was ranked in the top 45 at the conclusion of the shortened 2020 season. Sprlak-Puk and Perez nearly pulled out a victory over Indiana’s Patrick Fletchall and Andrew Redding falling in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2). Cacciatore and freshman Nic Wiedenhorn dropped a 6-2 decision to their Indiana counterparts, as did Wickwire and sophomore Shunya Maruyama.

After completing matches with Wisconsin and Minnesota in both singles and doubles competition, Nebraska will conclude the Badger Invitational on Sunday by taking on Indiana in singles play.
