Martins, Talley Win Events in Waco



The Nebraska track and field team began day one of the Michael Johnson Invitational on Friday in Waco, Texas.

Ryan Martins posted a personal-best 3:53.41 to win the 1,500 meters, one of two event titles for the Huskers on the day. Bailey Timmons finished third among collegiate runners with a time of 3:57.92.

Alex Talley, fresh off setting the hammer throw school record last weekend, won the hammer throw competition again with a mark of 218-11 (66.73m). Henry Zimmerman took fourth place with a throw of 188-7 (57.49m).

Lishanna Ilves finished second in the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 21-4 3/4 (6.52m), her best jump of the season. LaQwasia Stepney jumped a wind-aided 20-9 3/4 (6.34m), a personal best, and Ashley McElmurry set a wind-aided PR as well, 20-3 1/2 (6.18m), to place fourth.

Micaylon Moore was the runner-up in the long jump, leaping a personal-best 24-7 (7.49m). Till Steinforth placed fourth with a jump of 23-11 1/2 (7.30m). 

Maxwell Otterdahl was the second-best collegiate finisher in the discus with a throw of 181-10 (55.44m). 

Jacquelyn Abanses ran the 1,500 meters in a personal-record time of 4:32.11 to finish fifth. 

Kalynn Meyer led the Husker women in the discus, finishing sixth with a mark of 169-0 (51.52m). 

The meet resumes on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
