Huskers Head to No. 37 Iowa for Sunday Showdown



No. 28 Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-3 B1G) at No. 37 Iowa Hawkeyes (8-6, 8-4 B1G)

Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex

The No. 28 Nebraska women’s tennis team is set to travel to Iowa City, Iowa this Sunday for a matchup against the No. 37 Hawkeyes. Sunday marks the first of two matches between Nebraska and Iowa with the second meeting coming on Sunday, April 18 at the Dillon Tennis Center. 

Live video and stats will be available for fans to follow along with the match. 

Huskers Earn Highest Ranking Since 2014

The Huskers earned the No. 28 spot in the first ITA computer rankings released on Wednesday. No. 28 is NU’s highest team ranking since the opening week of the 2014 season when the Huskers were ranked No. 25. 

Novak Ranks No. 88 

Kristina Novak entered the first ITA singles rankings at No. 88. Novak is 11-4 in singles play this season, including wins over No. 70 Rachel Hanford of Minnesota and No. 89 Maria Shusharina of Northwestern. The sophomore from Slovenia has competed out of the No. 1 spot for the Huskers in every match this season and is currently on a three-match winning streak.

Scouting Iowa 
Freshman Alexa Noel leads the Hawkeyes in singles wins with an 18-0 record on the year. She is currently ranked No. 24 in singles, the highest ranking by a singles player in Iowa program history. In doubles, Noel has teamed up with Nebraska native, Samantha Mannix. As a pair, Noel and Mannix are 10-6 overall from the No. 1 spot. 

Elise Van Heuvelen also entered the singles rankings for Iowa and currently sits at No. 76, the highest ranking of her career. Van Heuvelen, a senior, is 11-4 on the year playing out of the No. 2 spot in every match. 

Iowa is led by fifth-year Head Coach Sasha Schmid.

History

The last time the Huskers and the Hawkeyes met was in 2019 when Nebraska won 4-2. Iowa leads the all-time series 17-11.

Up Next

The Huskers will have a week off from competition after the Iowa match. Play will resume on April 9 as NU continues its road slate at Maryland followed by a match on April 11 at Rutgers.
