Newport Beach, Calif. – The Huskers wrapped up day six of competition at their third and final fall appearance at the Newport Beach Invite on Saturday.
To begin play today, juniors Vivien Sandberg and Isabel Adrover Gallego faced each other in the semifinals for the third-place tournament. Adrover Gallego won the match by retirement, 5-2. Senior Samantha Alicea also competed in the third-place semifinals against Alice Otis, falling 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Anfisa Danilchenko was scheduled to play Anne Yang in the fourth-place semifinals, but Yang withdrew. Danilchenko will now move on to the fourth-place finals. To wrap up play today, sophomore Lucy Loy matched up against Hiromi Sasano in the fifth-place semifinals. Loy was up 7-5, 1-0, but the match got delayed until tomorrow due to rain.
Adrover Gallego started play for the Huskers on Friday against Emily Deming. Adrover Gallego was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Loy competed against Seha Yu, falling 6-3, 6-3. Sandberg faced Arizona’s Kayla Wilkins, losing in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Alicea matched up against Anne Yang, and Alicea won the match by retirement, 6-0, 5-5. Sophomore Ana Carmen Zamburek was scheduled to play Midori Castillo, but Carmen Zamburek withdrew from the match due to an injury.
Carmen Zamburek and Loy started play on Thursday. Carmen Zamburek matched up against Otis, falling 6-0, 7-5. Loy faced Brandy Walker, losing in three sets 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2. Adrover Gallego played her third match of the tournament against Yu, winning in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Danilchenko matched up against Emmi Kolyszko, winning 6-4, 6-4.
On Wednesday, Danilchenko started play against Aspen Schuman, a recruit that is ranked 1st in the nation for the recruiting class of 2026 on the Tennis Recruiting Network and was defeated 6-3, 6-0. Sandberg played her third match of the tournament against Kolyszko, winning 6-3, 6-4. Alicea matched up against Jwany Sherif and fell 6-2, 6-3. Loy, who began the tournament as an on-site alternate, played her first match on Wednesday against Emily Deming and was defeated 6-1, 6-1. To finish up Wednesday’s play, Carmen Zamburek played her second match of the invite and faced Nadia Kojonroj, losing 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Sandberg began play on Tuesday. Sandberg faced Schuman and fell 6-4, 6-3. Danilchenko played her second match of the tournament against Wilkins and was defeated 7-5, 6-3. Adrover Gallego matched up against Walker, winning in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. To finish up Tuesday’s play, Alicea defeated Parker Fry 6-4, 6-2.
On Monday, Adrover Gallego began play for NU, defeating Lexington Reed, a high school junior that is currently ranked 12th in the nation, by retirement, 7-6 (6), 5-2. Alicea matched up against Claire Zhang, falling 6-1, 6-1. Danilchenko faced Sandberg, and Sandberg won the match 6-3, 6-1. To wrap up Monday’s play, Carmen Zamburek defeated Tianmei Wang, a high school sophomore that is currently ranked 2nd in the nation 6-2, 6-4.
On Sunday, Loy will wrap up the semifinal round. Adrover Gallego will also play for third-place and Danilchenko will play for fourth place.
