Talley Earns CoSIDA Academic All-America Honor

Nebraska track and field senior Alex Talley was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team as the College Sports Information Directors of America announced its final honor of the 2021-22 season on Wednesday, June 22.

Talley, a native of West Fargo, N.D., was excellent on and off the track in his one year with the Nebraska track and field program in 2021-22 after transferring from North Dakota State. Talley carries a 3.83 GPA pursuing a master’s degree in engineering management. He graduated from NDSU with a 3.47 GPA in civil engineering.

Talley broke two school records this season, won a Big Ten championship and was a first-team All-American both indoors and outdoors. For his efforts, Talley was named Nebraska’s Outstanding Male Newcomer.

Talley began his Husker career last December by breaking the weight throw school record in his very first meet with a mark of 73-3 1/2 (22.34m). He went on to win seven regular-season event titles before claiming the Big Ten weight throw gold medal with a mark of 72-3 (22.02m). He was also the silver medalist in the Big Ten shot put and was named the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Championships. Talley became the first Husker male in school history to represent the school in both the weight throw and shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where he finished seventh and 12th, respectively.

Talley broke the hammer throw school record in his second outdoor meet to win the Sooner Invitational, and he battled through injuries throughout the latter part of the outdoor season to still achieve a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with another new school record, 234-8 (71.52m). Talley collected his sixth career All-America honor with his performance and the fifth first-team honor.

Overall, the Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field programs lead the nation with 54 combined CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 2002. All-time the Husker men’s and women’s track and field programs have combined for 68 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards since 1985.
