Huskers Wrap Up Play at the ITA Kickoff

Durham, N.C. — The Nebraska women’s tennis team (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten) battled, but dropped its two matches at the ITA Kickoff as the Huskers fell 4-0 to No. 6 Duke on Saturday and lost to Furman on Sunday, 4-1.
 
On Saturday against the Blue Devils, the match began with doubles play. At the No. 3 spot, Samantha Alicea and Isabel Adrover Gallego lost 6-0 to Duke’s Kelly Chen and Ellie Coleman. Duke secured the win in the No. 1 spot as Kristina Novak and Maja Makoric dropped their match to the No. 20 team in the nation, Chloe Beck and Margaryta Bilokin, 6-3. Chloe Kuckelman and Ellie Kuckelman’s match in the No. 2 spot went unfinished.
 
In singles action, Jillian Roa at No. 6 lost her matchup against No. 48 Ellie Coleman 6-0, 6-0, an Alicea dropped her match to Margaryta Bilokin 6-1, 6-1. To secure the win, Duke’s No. 15 Chloe Beck defeated Makoric at No. 2 6-1, 6-1. 
 
On Sunday, the Huskers faced Furman in both doubles and singles. On the doubles side, the Kuckelman duo, playing at No. 2, lost to Furman’s Madison Dillon and Ellie Schulson 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Furman sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Alicea and Adrover Gallego. Novak and Makoric’s match was tied 4-4 but went unfinished.
 
Highlighting singles play was Novak who defeated No. 45 Julia Adams. After winning the first set 7-5, Novak dropped the second, but came back to win the third 6-1. The Slovenia native is now 2-0 during spring play. Makoric, Chloe and Ellie all forced third sets, but Furman grabbed the team win with victories at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 4 spots.
 
Up next, the Huskers will stay on the road to take on Iowa State this Friday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. in Ames, Iowa.
