Huskers Travel to Northwestern and Illinois

The No. 46 Nebraska women’s tennis (6-2 Big Ten) team is set for back-to-back road contests at No. 8 Northwestern and Illinois this weekend. The Huskers opened the 2021 season welcoming the Wildcats and the Fighting Illini to Lincoln when NU fell just short to Northwestern, 4-3 and bounced back to top Illinois, 5-2. 

The Huskers are coming off a 1-1 weekend in Lincoln. Last Friday, Nebraska dropped a hard-fought match to No. 10 Ohio State 5-2 but returned on Sunday to take down Penn State 4-2.

Reifeis Coming off Big Weekend

Fifth-year senior Claire Reifeis is coming off an outstanding weekend of singles play. The Indianapolis, Ind., native opened the weekend with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 win over Ohio State’s Kollie Allen, at the No. 3 spot. Reifeis then dominated her match against Karly Friedland of Penn State, winning 6-2, 6-1.

She is on a three-match winning streak and holds a 2-1 record from the No. 3 spot. 

Adrover Gallego Powers Past Ohio State

Isabel Adrover Gallego impressed, winning a three set battle over Ohio State’s Isabelle Boulais at the No. 2 spot on Friday evening. The Sophomore defeated Boulais 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 to give the Huskers its second point of the match. 

The Mallorca Spain native is 5-6 on the year, consistently competing out of the No. 2 spot for the Huskers.  

Scouting Northwestern

The eighth ranked Wildcats have gotten out to a strong start in 2021. After a dominant run at the ITA Indoor Championships, NU has gone 6-1 in Big Ten play. Their first conference loss of the season came at the hands of No. 26 Michigan with the Wolverines overpowering NU, 5-2. on March 7th. 

Since Nebraska and Northwestern met in week one, the Wildcats have recorded wins over Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. 

Junior Clarrisa Hand has been dominant for Northwestern this season. She is currently on a six-match winning streak playing at the No. 3 spot. Hand defeated No. 71 Andrea Cerdan of Michigan last weekend. 

Scouting Illinois

The Fighting Illini are 2-5 in the Big Ten this season. Illinois is coming off a 4-2 win over Michigan State. Since meeting the Huskers in week one, Illinois has recorded wins over Minnesota and Michigan State and narrowly fell to Wisconsin, 4-3.

Kate Duong leads Illinois in singles wins this season with an 8-4 record. This season alone, Duong has competed at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 spots in the lineup. Ashley Yeah has also found singles success for Illinois. Yeah is 7-4 on the year playing primarily out of the No. 5 spot. 

Before welcoming Nebraska, Illinois will host Iowa on Friday afternoon.
