The Nebraska men’s tennis team (1-13, 1-13 Big Ten) will travel to No. 49 Minnesota (8-6, 8-6 Big Ten) this Friday, April 16, at 3 p.m. CT and Wisconsin (4-11, 4-10 Big Ten) this Sunday, April 18, at 12 p.m. CT as NU hopes to find its winning ways against the Gophers and Badgers.

Scouting Minnesota

• The Gophers finished the 2019-2020 season with an 8-3 record overall and a 1-0 record in Big Ten play, with quality wins over Auburn, Alabama and Wisconsin. 

• The doubles team of Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak are ranked No. 15 in the ITA coaches poll with a 10-2 record on the season.

• Head coach Geoff Young has led the Badgers for 15 seasons, with ten NCAA tournament appearances. 

• Minnesota enters Friday’s match with a recent 4-3 win over Big Ten foe, Wisconsin. 

 

Series History

• Minnesota holds an 9-2 all-time advantage over Nebraska, as the teams’ rivalry started when NU joined the Big Ten in 2011-2012. 

• The Gophers won the first ever matchup against the Huskers on January 23, 2010 in Lincoln. 

• NU last triumphed against Minnesota on March 24, 2019 — in a regular Big Ten season matchup played in Lincoln.

 

Scouting Wisconsin

• The Badgers closed the 2020 spring season with an 8-7 record overall, a 0-1 record in Big Ten competition and wins over Illinois State, North Dakota and DePaul.

• Danny Westerman, six-year veteran head coach, has led Wisconsin to a record of 64-48 (.573) and a 2017 NCAA tournament berth — its first appearance in seven years. 

• In the No. 1 spot, Leonard Soha, a junior from Berlin, has a season singles record of 7-10.

Series History

• Wisconsin leads the all-time series 10-5, with the Badgers winning the last matchup against the Huskers earlier this season.

• NU last beat the then No. 57 ranked Badgers on April 28, 2016 in Minneapolis at the Big Ten Championships. 

 

Maruyama Moved To No. 1

• The sophomore from Nagano, Japan moved up to the No. 1 singles position in last weekend’s matches against Northwestern and Illinois. 

Shunya Maruyama has played in every singles position with a 7-9 overall record and 6-5 record in Big Ten play.

 

Perez And Sprlak-Puk See Success 

• Junior Brandon Perez and sophomore Albert Sprlak-Puk are currently ranked No. 78 in the ITA coaches doubles poll with a 2-5 record. 

• The duo paired up on Sunday to defeat Illinois’ No. 1 doubles team, Alex Brown and Lucas Horve, 6-3.
