Huskers Finish Strong, But Fall To Gophers



MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — The Nebraska men’s tennis team (1-14, 1-14 Big Ten) dropped its matchup against the No. 49 Minnesota Gophers (9-6, 9-6 Big Ten) 5-2, outdoors Friday afternoon in Minneapolis at the Baseline Tennis Center.

Highlighting the day’s play was a doubles match sweep by Nic Wiedenhorn and Shunya Maruyama and two singles wins by Victor Moreno Lozano and Albert Sprlak-Puk.

 

The Huskers started off strong in doubles competition, with the No. 2 pair of Wiedenhorn and Maruyama sweeping Minnesota’s Vlad Lobak and Bodin Zarkovic, 6-0. The Husker duo is now 3-5 on the season. Brandon Perez and Moreno at No. 1 and Patrick Cacciatore and William Gleason at No. 3 kept their games close with multiple ties, but lost both matches, 5-7, and Minnesota took the doubles point. 

To start off singles play, Perez lost to Sebastian Vile at No. 5, 0-6, 1-6. At No. 1, Maruyama fell in straight sets to Jackson Allen, 2-6, 3-6 and Gleason dropped his match at No. 2 to Lobak, 1-6, 3-6, resulting in a match win for Minnesota. Play continued with Wiedenhorn battling Daniel Martin at No. 6 and falling 1-6, 6-7, but the Huskers finished on a high note. Getting his first Big Ten win of the season was Moreno beating Dylan Heap at No. 3, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0, and Sprlak-Puk defeated Siim Troost 7-6, 6-4 to close the match.

Up next, the Huskers will stay on the road and matchup with Wisconsin on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT in Madison, Wisc.
