Huskers Slam Boilermakers 6-1 – University of Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. The Nebraska women’s tennis team (4-1, 4-1 Big Ten) commanded the courts on Friday, defeating the Boilermakers (1-4, 1-4 Big Ten) 6-1 with the Huskers winning the doubles point followed by five singles matches. 

Doubles

NU earned the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Chloe Kuckelman and Hayley Haakenstad started things off with a dominant 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Purdue’s Seira Shimizu and Rut Galindo. Kuckelman and Haakenstad have not dropped a match this season as they hold a 3-0 record. Isabel Adrover Gallego and Claire Reifeis were unable to stop Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Zala Dovnik, falling 6-2. 

With the deciding match coming down to No. 1, Samantha Alicea and Kristina Novak rallied from being down 2-4 to defeat Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor 7-5, giving Nebraska the doubles point. Alicea and Novak improve to 2-0 on the year as a duo.

Singles

Haakenstad struck first in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Purdue’s Zeynep Naz Ozturk at the No. 6 spot. Chloe Kuckelman added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Seira Shimizu at No. 4. to bring the match score to 3-0

Purdue answered with a win at No. 6, bringing the score to 3-1. 

Novak battled at No. 1 to clinch the win for the Huskers. The sophomore defeated Ena Babic 7-5, 7-5 to improve to 5-0 in regular season play and 6-2 overall. 

Adrover Gallego overpowered Csilla Fodor at No. 2 to earn the 6-4, 7-6(3) win. Maja Makoric closed things out at No. 3, topping Zala Dovnik 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
