Huskers Shut Out Bluejays 7-0



Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) began the season with a win over Creighton (0-1 0-0 Big East), as they swept the Bluejays 7-0.

The Huskers faced the Bluejays in three doubles matches and six singles matches. In doubles, the Kuckelman duo got their first win of the season, defeating Creighton’s Malvika Shukla and Valerie Negin, 7-5. Also gaining their first doubles win was Kristina Novak and Maja Makoric, as they defeated Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox, 6-4. Rounding out doubles play was sophomores Jessica Aragon and Vivien Sandberg who finished the sweep as they beat Jeanne Gearity and Meredith Benson, 6-3. 

Nebraska started off with a bang in singles action, as all six competitors won their match. Freshman Lucy Loy gathered her first career win, knocking off Gearity, 6-3, 6-0. Ellie Kuckelman made a come-back this spring opener, defeating Creighton’s Meredith Benson, 6-0, 6-3. Novak sealed the win for the Huskers as she dominated Bluejay’s Kate Krueger, 6-3, 6-1. Chloe Kuckelman and Makoric started their seasons off with a victory in singles play. Finishing the sweep was Samantha Alicea who topped Creighton’s Malvika Shukla, 6-3, 3-6,(10-6)

Up next, the Huskers will travel to ITA kickoff to face the No. 6 Duke this Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
