Huskers Open Season at OSU Invite

The Nebraska men’s tennis team begins its fall season in Stillwater, Okla., this weekend at the Oklahoma State Invite. Oklahoma State University is set to host the three-day men’s invite with seven Huskers traveling to the tournament.

Seniors William Gleason and Victor Moreno Lozano look to lead the Huskers in their first fall tournament of the year. Gleason had a 4-12 singles record last spring primarily playing out of the No. 2 spot. The Lincoln, Neb., native also competed on the doubles court with four different partners while going 3-14 overall. Lozano finished the spring season with a 3-17 record in both singles and doubles play. However, both had good showings in the Big Ten Tournament as the Huskers knocked off Penn State in the opening round.

Three freshmen will be competing for the first time as Huskers this weekend, including Calvin Mueller, Rudra Dixit, and Roni Hietaranta. Sophomore Nic Wiedenhorn went 5-10 in doubles competition last season while also going 4-13 in singles action. Rounding out the Huskers lineup is junior Shunya Maruyama who is coming off a breakout season. The Nagano, Japan, native led Nebraska in singles and doubles wins while recording a team-best 8-12 in singles competition. He was also the only Husker to secure a win out of the No. 1 spot last season.

A total of three programs besides Nebraska will be represented at this weekend’s tournament, including Wichita State, Oklahoma State and Tulsa. Competition in Stillwater begins Friday morning with the opening rounds of singles and doubles.

Also, three Huskers will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Invite this weekend. Senior Patrick Cacciatore, junior Albert Sprlak-Puk and sophomore Andre Saleh will represent Nebraska in Des Moines.
