Huskers Grab Two Wins On Saturday



Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team (5-3, 0-0 Big Ten) recorded two shut out victories as it faced both Colorado State (3-6, 0-0 MWC) and South Dakota (3-7, 0-0 SLC) on Saturday at the Dillon Tennis Center. 

To start the day, the Huskers faced the Rams in three doubles matches and six singles matches. The No. 2 doubles team of Samantha Alicea and Ellie Kuckelman claimed the 6-3 win over Colorado State’s Matea Mihaljevic and Radka Buzkova. Securing a doubles win in the No. 3 spot was Chloe Kuckelman and Isabel Adrover Gallego as they faced Lucia Natal and Tracy Guo and won 6-4.  Rounding out doubles play was an unfinished match in the No. 1 spot between Kristina Novak and Maja Makoric against CSU’s No. 46 Matea Mihaljevic and Radka Buzkova, 5-5. 

To kick off singles play, Novak, out of the No. 1 spot, defeated Colorado State’s Sarka Richterova in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Adrover Gallego followed suit with a two-set win at the No. 2 spot over Somer Dalla-Bona, 6-2, 6-4. Sealing the match win for the Huskers was Chloe in the No. 3 spot as she won her match, 6-0, 6-4. 

Makoric’s match was tied one set a piece and she led the third set 5-2, while Alicea and Loy were battling at the No. 5 and 6 spots when the match was called. 

In the next match of the day, the Huskers faced the South Dakota Coyotes in both doubles and singles play. On the doubles side, Novak and Makoric got off to an impressive start at the No. 1 spot as they shut out Jana Lazarevic and Habiba Aly, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Alicea and Ellie secured the doubles point for the Huskers as they defeated South Dakota’s Estella Jaeger and Anna Marjia Bukina, 6-1. Chloe and Adrover Gallego’s match at No. 3 was left unfinished, but the pair led 4-3. 

Novak started off singles play for the Huskers with another straight-set victory as she defeated Aly, 6-3, 6-0. Chloe followed suit as she beat Havlickova, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 5 spot, Alicea won her match against USD’s Kmoskova 6-3, 6-1 and got the overall win for the Huskers. 

Adrover Gallego was up 4-0 in the second set, while Makoric and Sandberg were competing at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots when the match was finished. 

Up next, NU will stay home to face Kansas State on Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m. CT.
