Huskers Conclude Non-Conference Play with Saturday Doubleheader

Lincoln, Neb.—The Nebraska women’s tennis team returns to the Dillon Tennis Center to close out non-conference play with a double-header against Wyoming and Illinois State. The Huskers and the Cowgirls square off at 11 a.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup against the Redbirds.

Nebraska looks to bounce back after a tough 4-3 loss on the road to Kansas State on Wednesday.  


Scouting Wyoming

The Cowgirls enter Lincoln with a 7-2 record on the year and are coming off a pair of road wins over New Mexico State and UTEP. 

Sophomore Maria Oreshkina leads Wyo with a 7-2 singles record on the year out of the No. 1 spot. The Moscow, Russia native, was 19-12 in singles play her freshman year. In doubles, Oreshkina and Oleksandra Balaba have paired up at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots with a 5-2 record on the year.

In 2019, Wyoming was 14-9 overall with a 3-2 mark in the Mountain West. The Cowgirls are led by Dean Clower, who has been Head Coach of the program since 2012.

Historically, Nebraska leads the series over Wyoming 18-0. In 2019, Nebraska defeated the Cowgirls 5-0 at the Dillon Tennis Center.


Scouting Illinois State

Illinois State enters Lincoln with a 5-5 record on the year, including dominant wins over IUPUI and Dayton. 

Senior, Laura Arciniegas holds a 7-1 singles record playing primarily out of the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. The Redbirds have an impressive doubles team in Natalia Bravo and Tara Damnjanovic, who are 5-1 at the No. 1 spot. 

In 2019, Illinois State was 20-7 overall and were champions of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds made an appearance in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 14 years, falling to USC in the first round. They are led by seventh-year Head Coach Maja Kovacek.

Historically, the Huskers lead series over the Redbirds, 8-0.


Quick Hits

The Husker look to extend their home win streak this weekend. Nebraska is undefeated at home in 2020 with a 7-0 record. 

NU has won nine out of 13 of its double’s points.

Freshman Ellie Kuckelman is on a five-match win streak and holds an 8-2 record on the season with most wins out of the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. 

As a doubles team, twins Chloe and Ellie Kuckelman are 6-3 overall and have only suffered one loss at the No. 3 spot. 


Up Next

Nebraska will be back on the road for Big Ten play on March 14-15 as they take on Indiana and Purdue, respectively.
