Gleason Advances to the Round of 8 at the ITA Regionals



Lincoln Neb. – Nebraska men’s tennis continued its strong outing at the ITA Regionals, with senior William Gleason advancing to the round of 8 tomorrow.

Gleason advanced in the round of 32 after knocking off Avery Zavala of Arkansas 6-2, 6-1. He then came back in the round of 16 after dropping the first set against Oklahoma’s Justin Schlageter 6-2. The Lincoln, Neb. native rallied back to take the second and third sets to advance in the bracket to tomorrow’s main draw singles play.

Senior Dario Huber also won his round of 32 match against Melvin Manuel of Arkansas in two sets 6-4, 6-3. He put up a valiant fight against the top seed in the tournament, Oklahoma’s Mason Beiler, but ultimately fell short 6-3, 6-0. Three Huskers were eliminated in the round of 32 after winning both their matches yesterday.

In consolation play, sophomore Rudra Dixit went 2-0 as he beat Wichita State’s Ray Lo in the third-set tiebreaker to win the match. He carried the momentum into his second match of the day to top Creighton’s Zack Maline 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Roni Hietaranta also won his consolation match against Felipe Lopez from St. Louis as he swept the match 6-0, 6-0. Senior Patrick Cacciatore dropped his match against Cian McDonnell from North Dakota 6-3, 6-4, eliminating him from singles action.

Two Nebraska players competed in extra matches, with freshman Calvin Mueller and junior Albert Sprlak-Puk coming out victorious. The Huskers ended the day with an overall record of 8-5, making them 19-12 on the weekend.

Play will start tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with two rounds of doubles matches at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. Two rounds of consolation singles will begin at 11:00 a.m, and main draw singles will begin at 2:00 p.m. Fans can follow along on Twitter, or view the bracket here.
