Lawrence, Kan. – The Huskers kicked off their season with a tournament hosted by KU at the Jayhawk Tennis Center this week. Anfisa Danilchenko led the Huskers as she made her way through round robin play and single elimination to qualify for Sunday’s third-place final match.
Friday was a practice day for the ladies. Semifinal matches started on Saturday. Junior Isabel Adrover Gallego faced Kansas State’s Florentine Dekkers. Adrover Gallego lost the match 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Anfisa Danilchenko also played in the semifinal matches against Senior Samantha Alicea. Danilchenko won the match 6-3, 6-3.
Thursday marked the beginning of the qualifying rounds of single elimination draws. Sophomore Ana Carmen Zamburek played in the qualifying round for the third-place playoffs. Carmen Zamburek faced Dekkers losing 6-4, 6-3. Alicea played in the third-place playoffs and faced Rozalia Gruszczynska from K-State, defeating her 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Lucy Loy and Adrover Gallego played in the third-place playoffs against each other. Adrover Gallego won in three sets 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3. Danilchenko also played in the third-place playoffs against Reya Coe. Danilchenko defeated Coe 6-3, 6-2. Junior Vivien Sandberg competed in the second-place playoffs against Morgan Pyrz and was defeated in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Wednesday completed the last day of round robin draws for the tournament. Adrover Gallego played Washburn University’s Sofia Smagina. Smagina defeated Adrover Gallego 7-6 (7), 6-2. Loy played Alicea. Alicea won the match 6-1, 6-3. Danilchenko played Isabella Dunlap, defeating Dunlap 7-5, 6-2. Sandberg finished play on Wednesday, competing against KU’s Jocelyn Massey. Sandberg won the match, 6-1, 6-1.
On Tuesday, Loy played her third match of the week against Iowa’s Samantha Mannix, losing 6-4, 6-2. Danilchenko played her second match of the tournament against Audrey Spencer and was defeated 6-3, 6-2. Alicea competed in her second match of the week against Harper Santos, losing 6-3, 6-2. Adrover Gallego won her second match of the tournament, defeating Massey, 6-3, 6-1. Sandberg played her third match of the tournament against Smagina. Sandberg was defeated for the first time this week, 6-3, 6-2. Carmen Zamburek wrapped up Tuesday’s play against KU’s Tamari Gagoshidze. Carmen Zamburek lost the match 6-4, 6-1.
On Monday, Sandberg played her second match against Adrover Gallego. Sandberg won the match 6-4, 6-1. Danilchenko competed against KU’s Mariana Mayoma Velasquez for her first match of the tournament, falling in three set, 6-2, 5-7, 2-6. Loy also played her second match against Santos and won the match 6-2, 6-4. Alicea played her first match against Mannix. Alicea fell short, losing 6-3, 6-3. To wrap up play, Carmen Zamburek played her second match of the week against Morgan Pyrz. Carmen Zamburek lost 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Sandberg, Loy and Carmen Zamburek started play on Sunday for NU. Sandberg and Loy faced each other in the qualifying round with Sandberg defeating Loy 6-1, 6-0. Carmen Zamburek also played in the qualifying round, defeating her opponent Mariia Hlahola from Belmont University 6-3, 6-4.
Tomorrow, Danilchenko will play in the finals match for third place.
