Newport Beach, Calif. – Junior Isabel Adrover Gallego finished third as the Huskers wrapped up their final fall appearance at the Newport Beach Invite on Sunday.
Adrover Gallego won third-place overall at the tournament and went 5-1 in singles play. She began the week on Monday defeating Lexington Reed, the 12th ranked recruit in the nation for the class of 2024 on the Tennis Recruiting Network, by retirement, 7-6 (6), 5-2. Adrover Gallego played her second match of the tournament against Brandy Walker, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. On Thursday, Adrover Gallego faced Seha Yu, defeating her 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. On Friday, Adrover Gallego was defeated for the first time this week by her opponent Emily Deming, 6-4, 6-2. The third-place semifinal match took place on Saturday. Adrover Gallego matched up against Vivien Sandberg, winning the match by retirement, 5-2. Adrover Gallego went on to play in the final match on Sunday and was scheduled to play Alice Otis, but Otis withdrew from the match making Adrover Gallego the third-place winner.
Sophomore Anfisa Danilchenko went 2-4 in singles play this week at the tournament. Danilchenko started off the week on Monday, matching up against Sandberg and losing 6-3, 6-1. On Tuesday, Danilchenko was defeated by Arizona’s Kayla Wilkins, 7-5, 6-3. On Wednesday, Danilchenko faced Aspen Schuman, a recruit that is ranked 1st in the nation for the recruiting class of 2026, falling 6-3, 6-0. Danilchenko defeated Emmi Kolyszko on Thursday 6-4, 6-4. Danilchenko was scheduled to play Anne Yang on Saturday for the fourth-place semifinals, but Yang withdrew from the tournament, qualifying Danilchenko to play in the finals. On Sunday, Danilchenko matched up against Nadia Kojonroj in the fourth-place finals, falling 6-2, 7-5.
Senior Samantha Alicea had a 2-3 record this week. Alicea began play on Monday against Claire Zhang, falling 6-1, 6-1. On Tuesday, Alicea matched up against Parker Fry, winning the match 6-4, 6-2. On Wednesday, Alicea was defeated by Jwany Sherif, 6-2, 6-3. On Friday, Alicea defeated Yang by retirement, 6-0, 5-5. Alicea qualified for the third-place semifinals on Saturday. She played Otis, losing the match 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Vivien Sandberg also went 2-3 in singles play this week. Sandberg began the week on Monday, playing Danilchenko, winning the match 6-3, 6-1. On Tuesday, Sandberg faced Schuman, falling 6-4, 6-3. Sandberg matched up against Kolyszko on Wednesday, winning the match 6-3, 6-4. On Friday, Sandberg was defeated by Wilkins, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. On Saturday, Sandberg played in the third-place semifinal match against Adrover Gallego and was defeated by retirement, 5-2.
Sophomore Lucy Loy had a 0-4 record this week. Loy, who began the tournament as an on-site alternate, played her first match on Wednesday against Deming, falling 6-1, 6-1. On Thursday, Loy matched up against Walker and lost the match 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2. Loy played her third match of the tournament on Friday against Yu, losing 6-3, 6-3. Loy qualified for the fifth-place semifinals and matched up against Hiromi Sasano, falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Ana Carmen Zamburek went 1-3 in singles play this week. She began the week on Monday defeating Tianmei Wang, a high school sophomore that is currently ranked 2nd in the nation for her recruiting class, 6-2, 6-4. On Wednesday, Carmen Zamburek played Kojonroj, losing the match 7-6 (4), 6-2. On Thursday, Carmen Zamburek matched up against Otis, falling 6-0, 7-5. On Friday, Carmen Zamburek was scheduled to play Midori Castillo Meza, but had to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury.
