Rogers Climbs Rankings, Johansson Tabs Title at Tyson Invite

As Nebraska track and field wrapped up the weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Jenna Rogers improved her personal-best high jump clearance to move up in the national rankings and Axelina Johansson collected the women’s shot put title. Niko Schultz added a Husker win in the open section of the 800m with a time that ranks fifth in school history.

Rogers cleared 6-1 1/2 (1.87m) to finish second in the women’s high jump. That height ties her for third in school history, ties her for fourth in the country and gives her sole possession of the top spot in the Big Ten.

Madi Scholl and Brooklyn Miller both cleared 5-8 1/2 (1.74m) to take seventh and eighth place.

Johansson was crowned women’s shot put champion with a distance of 61-2 3/4 (18.66m). She is coming off a school record-breaking performance at last weekend’s Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, where she threw for 63-4 (19.30m). Taylor Latimer (52-10 1/4, 16.11m) and Kalynn Meyer (51-3 1/2, 15.63m) chipped in sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively.

Schultz ran the fifth-fastest 800m time in school history, winning the open section in 1:48.80. That time is tied for sixth in the Big Ten this season. Lindsey Blehm added a personal-best 800m time of 2:11.73 to place 14th.

The Husker men finished eighth in the 4×400 relay in 3:08.43. Jacob Hyde, Nick Bryant, Niko Schultz and Omar Rodgers posted the No. 8 time in school history. 

Rhianna Phipps and Ashley McElmurry teamed up for top-five finishes in the women’s triple jump with distances of 41-10 1/2 (12.76m) and 40-11 1/2 (12.48m). Micaylon Moore placed sixth in the men’s triple jump with a personal-best leap of 51.10 (15.80m).

Jonah Wilson threw a distance of 66-9 1/4 (20.35m) in the men’s shot put to finish as runner-up, while Maxwell Otterdahl (61-11 1/2, 18.88m) and Kevin Shubert (61-3 1/2, 18.68m) placed sixth and seventh.

In the men’s high jump, Tyus Wilson tied his personal-best clearance of 7-0 1/2 (2.15m) to tie for third. Michael Hoffer was the next finisher for the Big Red, clearing 6-11 1/2 (2.12m) to take seventh.

Deavion Deleon covered the track in a personal-best 5:10.08 to finish sixth in the mile. Lorenzo Paissan clocked a 21.62 in the men’s 200m to finish 27th.

Nick Ronnfeldt finished sixth in the open section of the men’s shot put with a mark of 56-2 1/2 (17.13m).

In the open section of the men’s pole vault, Drake Burton and Garrison Hughes pitched in top-ten efforts. Each clearing 16-2 3/4 (4.95m), Burton tied for seventh and Hughes took ninth.

Nebraska will be back at the Devaney Center Indoor Track on Friday, Feb. 17 for the Nebraska Tune-Up.
