Rapid reaction: Update on RB Ervin; Open competition at kicker; Williams says Huskers ‘tired of being close’ | Football

Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin is attended to by the Husker training staff after an injury in the second half against Oklahoma on Saturday in Norman, Okla.

Scott Frost addressed the media after the Huskers’ 23-16 loss to Oklahoma.

Nebraska went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma. Now the Huskers turn their attention to a physical Michigan State team that is riding a lot of momentum following a win at Miami over the weekend.

The Spartans (3-0) are ranked 20th this week and NU quarterback Adrian Martinez said Saturday’s 6 p.m. showdown will be a “fistfight.”

Nebraska expects a fight up front. Michigan State is a “black and blue physical team,” NU coach Scott Frost said, and NU will see one of the top defensive fronts in the Big Ten.

That means a big challenge for a Husker offensive line that continues to search for consistency in run blocking and limiting mistakes.

“I think they’re getting closer every week,” Frost said Monday of the O-line. “But it’s still a work in progress. We need those guys to come off the ball and create some momentum.”

The Huskers have been working Ethan Piper and Trent Hixson at left guard, and Broc Bando could factor into the mix as his health improves.

“We’d love if someone would take that spot and run with it,” Frost said.

More from Monday’s Husker news conference:

* Frost said true freshman running back Gabe Ervin, who started the Huskers’ season opener, has a knee injury (patellar tendon) that will keep him out for a while. It could be a season-ending injury, Frost added.
