NU Dealt First Loss of Season

Clemson, S.C. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team picked up its first loss of the season in a 4-0 defeat against Clemson on Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.

 

Sunday’s match got underway with doubles action. Roni Hietaranta and Lars Johann picked up the first win with a 6-3 victory over Clemson’s Matt Pitts and Trey Stinchcomb on Court 3. The Tigers answered back quickly with Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker picking up a 3-6 win over Nic Wiedenhorn and Shunya Maruyama on Court 1.

 

The doubles point came down to a long battle between Nebraska’s Calvin Mueller and William Gleason and Clemson’s Max Smith and Jorge Plans Gonzalez on Court 2. The set went to a seven-point tiebreaker and Clemson clinched the doubles victory 6-7 (4).

 

Clemson came out strong in singles play with No. 118 Azuma taking down No. 75 Hietaranta 4-6, 4-6, to pick up the Tigers’ second point of the match on Court 1. On Court 6, Wiedenhorn dropped his singles match 3-6, 5-7 to Smith, extending the Tigers’ lead to three. On Court 2, Maruyama battled hard in the second set, but came up just short and dropped his match 0-6, 6-7 (4) to Gonzalez, giving the Tigers the victory.

 

The three remaining matches went unfinished. Mueller and Johann were each tied at one set apiece in their contests, and Gleason was trailing his match 4-6, 3-5.

 

The Huskers return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, against Cornell at the Dillon Tennis Center.
