Next step for Nebraska running backs: More live work

Early impressions of Nebraska running backs have been good. Upcoming ones should be more accurate.

With the first two spring practices in helmets only and just a sprinkling of live work so far, Husker rushers haven’t had much chance to change the outlook of offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield. The coach said Thursday that the collection — five scholarship backs, seven walk-ons — has different individual traits.

“Some guys catch the ball, some guys run the ball,” Satterfield said. “Some guys run through you, some guys run around you. We’ve been really focused on throwing the football a little bit more this spring thus far.”

Should the Huskers scrimmage Saturday — Satterfield said he expects some “action” — evaluations will be more detailed. Sophomore Emmett Johnson, senior Rahmir Johnson and sophomore transfer Dante Dowdell were among those on the field Thursday, Satterfield said, while others sat for minor “precautionary reasons.” The other scholarship backs in the group are sophomore Kwinten Ives and the injured junior Gabe Ervin.

“I think we’ll be able to tell a lot about the running backs after we get our first live scrimmage and we see who can break a tackle and who can make a guy miss,” Satterfield said.
