Matt Rhule will be ‘massively successful’, says Alberts

Husker athletic teams are winning on the field and on the court, outgoing athletic director Trev Alberts said, and whoever succeeds him at Nebraska inherits a strong overall program.

“Nebraska’s in great shape — the best shape it’s been in a long time,” Alberts said.

Though it’s no longer his project to push, the $450 million Memorial Stadium renovation should go forward based on the work that’s been done and the money already donated to it.

“I think it’s going to be critically important to Nebraska’s future,” Alberts said. “A lot of people are invested in it. It’s a really good plan. I would be really surprised if it didn’t move forward.”

Alberts also expects coach Matt Rhule, who posted a 5-7 record in his first season, to make Nebraska football a contender.

“Matt Rhule is the right coach at Nebraska and is going to be massively successful,” Alberts said. “They just need to allow him to continue executing his vision. Matt has an absolute blueprint of success. He’s changed the culture of the football program. He’s had an immense impact on the culture of the rest of the department.

“He’s a game-changer.”
