Lambrechts Jr. Named B1G Field Athlete of the Championships

Nebraska junior thrower Burger Lambrechts Jr. was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships on Wednesday after a vote by the league’s head coaches. He is the first-ever Nebraska men’s track and field athlete to win a Big Ten Athlete of the Championships award.

On Saturday at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio, Lambrechts shattered his previous shot put personal best with a gold-medal winning throw of 67-4 3/4 (20.54m) on his fifth attempt, which won the event by more than two feet. Lambrechts had never topped 20 meters before in his career, but both his fifth and sixth (20.47m) throws on Saturday went well beyond 20 meters.

“It’s very exciting. I definitely took the long way up,” Lambrechts said after his win. “To get the title and 20 meters on the same day was years of training coming together and it was very special.”

The Big Ten runner-up last year, Lambrechts climbed to No. 2 in school history behind only Carl Myerscough’s school record of 70-6 1/4 (21.49m). Lambrechts ranks fifth in the nation in the shot put and was announced as a qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships on Wednesday.

Lambrechts was also an NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier last year, but the meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nebraska’s Sportsmanship Award honorees were Michael Hoffer and Ashley McElmurry.
