LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska track and field team captured 12 event titles on Friday at the Nebraska Tune-Up at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track.
Darby Thomas had a career-best long jump of 21-5 1/2 (6.54m) on her second attempt to win the event. It moved her into the top 10 in school history at No. 3 and ranks first in the Big Ten and tied for seventh nationally this season. Thomas’ jump was the best indoor long jump by a Husker woman since 1997.
Marika Spencer led a 1-2-3 finish in the women’s weight throw with a standout performance. Spencer notched a throw of 67-11 1/2 (20.71m) on her fifth attempt, a new personal best that ranks second in school history. Taylor Latimer, who is the school-record holder in the event, took second at 67-9 1/2 (20.66m), and Axelina Johansson recorded a new personal best of 63-8 1/4 (19.41m) to crack the NU top 10 at No. 7.
Lishanna Ilves was the long jump runner-up at 20-7 1/4 (6.28m), and LaQwasia Stepney took third place at 20-3 3/4 (6.19m), a new personal best. The NU women swept the top five spots in both the long jump and the shot put. The latter event was led by Latimer’s winning throw of 53-7 1/2 (16.34m). Kalynn Meyer was the runner-up with a PR of 52-4 1/2 (15.96m), and Spencer was third at 46-11 1/2 (14.31m).
The Husker men recorded the top six collegiate finishes in the men’s weight throw with Henry Zimmerman leading the charge at 69-7 (21.21m). Maxwell Otterdahl threw 67-4 1/4 (20.53m), and Zach Morrison posted a 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) to round out the top three spots.
Otterdahl was the top collegiate finisher in the men’s shot put with a throw of 61-1 1/2 (18.63m). He led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Husker men with Kevin Shubert (57-11, 17.65m) and Trevor Begeman (55-7 1/2 (16.95m) also earning top-three honors.
Michael Hoffer won the men’s high jump title, clearing 7-0 1/2 (2.15m) to record a new personal best. Charlie Hoston claimed the men’s triple jump crown at 48-2 1/2 (14.69m), also a new PR. Brooklyn Miller placed third for the Husker women in the high jump, clearing 5-7 3/4 (1.75m).
On the track, Emma Algarin sprinted to a personal-best 7.48 to win the women’s 60 meters. Her time cracked the all-time Husker top 10 in a tie for eighth. Algarin took second in the 200 meters at 24.39, while Kayla Hugg was third in 24.75. Alex Nelson was victorious in the men’s 200 meters, setting a new personal best of 21.29.
Darius Luff captured the 60-meter hurdles crown in 7.71, while Tyler Drew was the runner-up at 8.10. Kerrigan Myers won the women’s 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 8.53, while Johanna Ilves was right behind her at 8.54.
Cory Berg was the top collegian in the 400 meters, running 48.58, a new PR. Cody Mroczek took third at 49.13. The women’s 600-meters title went to Kaitlynn Johnson, who posted a PR time of 1:35.90. Jamieson Battistella (PR 1:38.28) was third. Daniel Mattern won the men’s 600 meters in 1:20.75, while Nick Bryant (1:20.78) and Holden Ruse (1:23.13) rounded out the top three.
Lorenzo Paissan took runner-up honors in the men’s 60 meters at 6.78, and Matthew Brown was third (6.85). Lindsey Blehm was the runner-up in the 800 meters in 2:14.93.
Hugg, Karlie Moore, Winsome Harris and Ramonia Clarke teamed up to run a 3:45.81 to win the women’s 4x400m relay.
The Huskers will head to Geneva, Ohio next week for the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute on Feb. 25-26.
