Huskers Swimming and Diving Team Set for Dual Meet Against Illinois

January 25, 2024

The Nebraska swimming and diving team is geared up for their first meet of 2024, taking on the Illinois Fighting Illini in a dual meet this Saturday, January 27, at 11 a.m. (CT) in Champaign, Ill. The Huskers are coming off a strong performance at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, in December, setting the stage for an exciting showdown.

Nebraska’s swimming team is riding high on recent successes, with five of its swimmers achieving NCAA B Cuts at the Hawkeye Invitational. Freshmen Beatrix Tanko and Anastasia Tichy stood out with career-best times of 53.26 in the 100 butterfly and 1:58.87 in the 200 butterfly, respectively. JoJo Randby and Maia Hall contributed significantly, adding B standards in the 100 breaststroke, while Hall also achieved a B cut in the 200 breaststroke.

Sophomore Gena Jorgenson made a splash with two B cuts in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. Additionally, the 800 freestyle relay team comprising Jorgenson, Caterina Bisiacchi, Lexi Kucera, and Giulia Marchi clinched victory with a time of 7:18.69.

Nebraska’s divers also showed promising form at the CAMO International Invitational in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Freshman Antonina Harned secured a third-place finish in the three-meter dive, and Kelsey Clairmont’s fourth-place finish on the platform, along with Abby Baxter’s sixth place in the three-meter, both were zone qualifying.

The Huskers face a formidable opponent in Illinois, led by junior Sydney Stoll. Stoll, who holds the school record in the 100 IM, recently claimed three titles in a meet with Purdue and Missouri. The Huskers, however, have a historical advantage over Illinois, holding an 8-2 edge in the last 10 meetings.

Last season, in a matchup at Lincoln (Jan. 21, 2023), Nebraska emerged victorious with a score of 168-132, where Jorgenson set a pool record in the 1000 freestyle and the team claimed nine other first-place finishes.

Fans can keep track of the live results through Meet Mobile and get all the latest updates on the team’s performance. With the team showing strong form in individual and relay events, this weekend’s meet is shaping up to be an exciting contest.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Huskers swimming and diving team as they dive into the new year with high hopes and determination.
