Huskers Split Between Two Meets This Weekend

The Nebraska track and field team will split between meets in Indiana and Minnesota this weekend.

The Huskers’ pole vaulters and throwers will head to Minneapolis, Minnesota for the M City Classic on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the rest of the Husker squad will travel to Bloomington, Indiana for the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The M City Classic begins on Friday at Noon with the men’s hammer throw. That will be followed by the women’s hammer throw and the men’s and women’s discus. The Huskers are entering the final week of the regular season before they turn their attention to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. After taking next weekend off, the Huskers will head to Champaign, Illinois for the Big Ten Championships.

Tyler Loontjer continues to lead the Big Ten in the men’s pole vault with his personal-best jump of 18-1 (5.51m) last week at the Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays. Loontjer was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week for his efforts on Wednesday. Joey Daniels ranks third in the 110-meter hurdles (13.57), and Burger Lambrechts Jr. is second in the shot put at 64-0 1/4 (19.51m). All three rank in the top 15 nationally. Loontjer is ninth in the pole vault, while Daniels has the 11th-best 110-meter hurdles time in the country. Lambrechts Jr. is currently 13th in the shot put, as is Husker junior Mayson Conner in the high jump. He cleared an outdoor-best 7-2 1/2 (2.20m) at the Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays to take over the Big Ten lead.

For the women, Judi Jones leads the Big Ten in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her PR of 10:04.75. She ranks 21st nationally. Maddie Harris and Mirta Kulisic rank first and second, respectively, in the women’s javelin. Harris threw a PR 168-8 (51.42m) at the Husker B1G Invitational. Mirta Kulisic threw 167-6 (51.05m) in Florida early in April. Harris and Kulisic rank 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the javelin.
