Huskers Set for Season Debut

The Nebraska track and field team begins the 2022 indoor season at home, hosting the Graduate Classic on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 14-15 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Friday’s schedule begins with the women’s weight throw, men’s long jump and women’s 60m hurdles qualifying round all set for a 4 p.m. start. Running events begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the field events start at noon with the men’s triple jump.

The Huskers return a first-team All-American, two second-team All-Americans and four Big Ten champions from the indoor season last year.

Burger Lambrechts Jr. returns as the defending conference champion in the shot put after placing fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. It was the best finish by a Husker male in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2004. Kevin Shubert was a second-team All-American in the shot put last year after placing 16th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in his first-ever trip to nationals.

Lishanna Ilves was one of just three freshmen to qualify for the women’s long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season. Ilves finished 16th in her first trip to nationals and was crowned the Big Ten champion.

Ieva Turke and Papay Glaywulu swept the Big Ten indoor triple jump titles for the Huskers last season. Turke successfully defended her Big Ten indoor triple jump title to win for the second consecutive season, while Glaywulu captured the conference title in his debut season with the Big Red.

The Huskers currently have four athletes ranked in the top 10 of three different events after their performance at the K-State Winter Invitational last month.

Alex Talley ranks first in the country in the shot put (65-7, 19.99m) and second in the weight throw (73-3 1/2, 22/34m). Lambrechts Jr. sits seventh in the shot put (62-1 3/4, 18.94m), while Maxwell Otterdahl rounds out the top 10 in the weight throw with a mark of 66-1 1/2 (20.15m). Making her Husker debut last month, Axelina Johansson leads the nation in the shot put with a launch of 56-6 1/2 (17.23m).
