Huskers Secure Flags on Friday at Drake Relays

Nebraska track and field continued action at the Drake Relays on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa. The Huskers claimed two titles and a pair of runner-up finishes at Drake Stadium.

The Husker men won the 4x800m at the Drake Relays for the first time in 27 years to capture their flags. Nick Bryant, Sam Easley, Cortez Ruiz and Niko Schultz teamed up to clock a 7:25.78.

Nebraska swept the top three spots of the triple jump, led by Velecia Williams taking the title with a season-best 41-4 1/2 (12.61m). Ashley McElmurry added a season-best 41-4 1/4 (12.60m) to claim runner-up honors and Lotavia Brown finished third with a mark of 41-0 1/4 (12.50m). 

With a distance of 53-9 3/4 (16.40m), Taylor Latimer was the shot put runner-up. Kalynn Meyer threw for 48-10 3/4 (14.90m) to take seventh. In the men’s shot put, Kevin Shubert finished fourth with a mark of 60-4 (18.39m).

Tyus Wilson earned the bronze in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 7-1 1/2 (2.17m). Mayson Conner pitched in a fifth-place performance with a mark of 7-0 1/4 (2.14m).

Betty Rosvold claimed fourth place in the discus with a throw of 168-9 (51.45m). Kalynn Meyer threw for 168-5 (51.33m) in the open section of the discus to place third. Tyler Brown finished 10th in the open section of the discus, tossing 164-6 (50.15m).

Omar Rodgers brought in the sixth-place finish with a 52.06 in the men’s 400m hurdles. Karlie Moore sped to a personal-best 1:00.34 in the women’s 400m hurdles to place 10th.

Johanna Ilves claimed a spot in tomorrow’s 100m hurdles final, clocking a 13.79 in the prelims to finish sixth.

Rhianna Phipps jumped 18-7 (5.66m) to place seventh in the long jump.

In the 100m prelim, Lorenzo Paissan took 10th with a 10.63. Meghan Walker raced to 10th place in the 400m with a 56.38.

Jacob Hyde, Micah Moore, Clayton Keys and Cory Berg finished third in the 4x200m with a time of 1:26.82.

The Husker men (Darius Luff, Lorenzo Paissan, Jacob Hyde, Micah Moore) qualified for tomorrow’s 4x100m final with a time of 41.06 in the prelims.

A few Huskers competed at the Kip Janvrin Open as well. Brynna McQuillen was second in the 1,500m with a time of 4:36.14. Hillevi Carlsson finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 196-1 (59.78m).

The Huskers are set for the final day of the Drake Relays tomorrow, beginning with the javelin at 10 a.m. (CT).
