Huskers Finish Strong at The Bruzzy



Nebraska shot a final-round 292 to climb three spots in the team standings to finish sixth in a loaded 15-team field at The Bruzzy in Ardmore, Okla., on Sunday.

The Huskers closed the three-round tournament at 884 (+44) on the par-70, 5,976-yard layout at the Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club. The Big Red ended Saturday’s first round in a tie for second with a 291 (+11), before slipping to ninth after a second-round 301 (+21). 

Nebraska regrouped on Sunday behind final-round scores of 72 (+1) from both Megan Whittaker (Elkhorn, Neb.) and Lindsey Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.), and a 73 (+2) from Michaela Vavrova (Bojnice, Slovakia). Kelli Ann Strand (Challis, Idaho) capped Nebraska’s team score with a final-round 75 (+5).

The Huskers used their final-round performance to finish ahead of No. 36 Houston (7th, 891) and No. 35 TCU (9th, 894) in the team standings. Four of the five teams that finished ahead of the Big Red were ranked among the top 45 teams in the nation by GolfStat, including the hosts from No. 42 North Texas, which won the team title with an 856 (+16).

The Eagles held off No. 39 Tulsa (858) by two strokes, while Purdue took third at 868. No. 32 Texas Tech (869) and No. 17 UCF (871) completed the five teams that finished ahead of the Huskers.

Whittaker led the Huskers for the tournament, finishing in a tie for 27th individually at 221 (+11). Thiele closed the tournament just one shot behind Whittaker in a tie for 31st at 222 (+12), while sophomore Miu Takahashi (Nasu-Machi, Japan) tied for 36th at 223 (+13). 

Strand put four Huskers among the top 40 in the 84-player field with a 224 (+14) to tie for 40th, while Vavrova rounded out the Nebraska contingent in a tie for 55th at 227 (+17).

 

Tulsa’s Lilly Thomas took medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 208 (-2) as the only golfer in the field to finish better than par. Patricia Sinolugan (210) and Ellie Roth (211), both from North Texas, finished in second and third respectively. Pimpisa Sisutham (UCF), Lovisa Gunnar (Tulsa) and Anna Nordfors (UCF) tied for fourth. 

The Huskers will travel to their final regular-season tournament when they compete at the Lady Buckeye Invitational (April 15-16) at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
