Huskers Fifth After Second Day of Prairie View Invitational



Dallas, Texas – The No. 4 Nebraska bowling team rose to fifth place after day two of the Prairie View Invitational on Saturday.

Sophomore Gwen Maeha leads the Huskers in individual standings, sitting in eighth place with a pinfall of 1,005, just 100 pins behind the leader. Maeha is followed by redshirt freshman Kayla Verstraete in ninth having knocked over 995 pins. Nebraska’s other bowlers consisted of Crystal Elliott (966, 15th), Cassidy Ray (958, 18th), Michelle Guarro (511, 48th), Leah Glazer (174, 60th) and Kendyl Hofmeister (151, 67th). 

Nebraska is fifth (9,438) in a very competitive field led by No. 3 Arkansas State (9,851). Top-ranked McKendree (9,810) is in second, followed by No. 10 Youngstown State (9,455) and No. 5 Sam Houston State (9,455) in third and fourth place, respectively.

The bowlers beat No. 7 Stephen F. Austin in its first match, 898-858. Verstraete led NU with a pinfall of 212 with Elliott in second with 189 pins. Maeha dropped 180 pins, while Ray (166) and Hofmeister (151) finished out the team.

Keeping the momentum going, NU took on No. 7 Stephen F. Austin yet again in match two and came out with a commanding 1,054-985 victory. Maeha bowled a strong 246 game with several other Huskers following suit. Elliott dropped 218 pins followed by Verstraete (209), Ray (206) and Guarro (175).

Nebraska marched on to face top-ranked McKendree where Nebraska suffered its lone loss of the day, falling 962-982 in a highly contested matchup. Verstraete took over the reins to lead the bowling team with a 208. Elliott dropped 203 pins with Ray (201), Maeha (179) and Guarro (171) rounding out the Huskers.

Next up on the schedule was Tulane, where NU took its third victory of the day, winning 936-911. Maeha shone in the spotlight by knocking over 213 pins. Ray (199), Verstreaete (191), Glazer (174) and Elliott (159) completed the team.

In their final match, the Huskers were victorious once again, defeating Texas Southern, 910-781. Elliott was the top bowler for NU taking down 197 pins followed by Maeha (187), Ray (186), Verstraete (175) and Guarro (165)

Nebraska will resume bowling at 8:25 a.m. against Tulane in a Traditional Style match before entering bracket play.
