Huskers in Sixth at Prairie View Invitational



Dallas, Texas – The Nebraska bowling team sits in sixth place after day one at the Prairie View Invitational on Friday.

The Huskers knocked down 4,678 pins, putting them 294 pins behind tournament leader and third-ranked Arkansas State (4,972). No. 5 Sam Houston State sits in third (4,829) followed by No. 9 Louisiana Tech (4,817), top-ranked McKendree (4,806) and Tulane (4,740) rounding out the top five.

NU began the tournament by starting Leah GlazerGwen MaehaMichelle GuarroCassidy Ray and Crystal Elliott.

In their first matchup of the day, Nebraska fell 892-966 to Prairie View A&M. NU lost in their first game 157-197 but bounced back with a couple wins (211-172, 192-187) to take a 2-1 lead. In its next two games, the team fell 188-238 and 144-172.

The Huskers shook up their lineup heading into their match against No. 10 Youngstown State with Maeha, Alexia CassmanKayla Verstraete, Ray and Elliott.

Cassman and Verstraete both had their first career action, as NU went on to win 1,029-888. The bowlers took a 2-0 lead with 215-157 and 253-155 victories. After falling 140-203 in the third game, the bowlers were unfazed, earning a pair of victories (214-186, 207-187) on their way to a win.

Following their first victory of the day, the bowlers took on No. 9 Louisiana Tech, where they lost 897-992. The Huskers fell in the first four matches (175-187, 180-207, 180-199, 170-236) but came back to earn a 192-163 win to close out the match.

Heading into the fourth match of the day, the Huskers started their third new lineup of the day with Maeha, Kendyl Hofmeister, Verstraete, Ray and Elliott. NU fell to third-ranked Arkansas State 967-1,020 as the Huskers fell 151-172 and 181-143 in their first two games before claiming a 203-191 victory. The Huskers lost their last two games 230-278 and 202-236 before moving on to their last match of the day.

NU chose to cement their lineup (Maeha, Hofmeister, Verstraete, Ray and Elliott) as they rounded out the day against No. 5 Sam Houston State. The Huskers fell 893-1,069, but put up a strong fight along the way by claiming the first game 192-162 before losing the next two matches 194-206 and 182-236. NU finished the day with two more losses (144-236 and 181-229) but look to rebound tomorrow.

The bowling team will have a Traditional style positional round matchup to begin day two of the tournament at 9:25 a.m. before facing No. 7 Stephen F. Austin, No. 1 McKendree, Tulane and Texas Southern.
