Huskers Fall In Road Match To Cornell

Ithaca, N.Y. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team (3-10, 0-0 Big Ten) fell in the Big Apple against the No. 61 Cornell Big Red (9-3, 0-0 Ivy League) 6-1 at the Reis Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Doubles action kicked things off, as Cornell swept the double point after winning both matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Fresh off a semifinal appearance at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn fell in the No. 1 spot to Cornell’s Alafia Ayeni and Pietro Rimondini, 6-2. The Big Red clinched the doubles point after a victory in the No. 2 spot with Nathan Mao and Adit Sinha knocking off Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama, 6-3. The third match went unfinished.

In singles action, Huber dropped the first match to No. 33 Ayeni in the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-3, to go down 2-0. In the No. 2 spot, Calvin Mueller also fell to Papoe in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, to extend the Big Red lead to 3-0. McCarthy clinched the victory for Cornell as he downed Patrick Cacciatore in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-3. Maruyama was the only Husker to take a singles match as he won the first set before the second was called due to injury. William Gleason and Lozano both took a set each for Nebraska, before falling in the tiebreaker.

Up next, the Huskers will head south to take on UCF on Wednesday, March 16, in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center.
