Huskers Dominate South Carolina State in Impressive 91-62 Victory

December 29, 2023 – In a remarkable display of basketball prowess, the Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s team cruised to a commanding 91-62 victory over South Carolina State on Friday evening, showcasing their depth and offensive power.

The star of the game, C.J. Wilcher, led the charge with an 18-point performance, hitting an impressive 7-of-9 from the field, including two 3-pointers. Coming off the bench, Wilcher’s energy was a key factor in Nebraska’s dominant start, which saw them establish a 23-3 lead within the first 10 minutes of play.

Brice Williams contributed significantly to the win with 16 points and seven rebounds, demonstrating his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. Josiah Allick and Eli Rice weren’t far behind, each adding 10 points to Nebraska’s tally.

Nebraska’s (11-2) defensive effort was equally impressive as their offense. They held South Carolina State (4-11) to a mere 31.1 percent shooting overall, including a stifling 5-of-42 in the first half. This defensive intensity allowed the Huskers to build a massive 50-11 lead by halftime, marking the lowest points Nebraska has allowed in a half since 2009.

The Huskers’ shooting was on fire in the first half with a 55.2 percent success rate from the field. Even though they cooled off slightly in the second half, their lead was never seriously threatened, at one point stretching to a staggering 49 points.

Contributions came from all corners of the roster, with 11 of the 12 Huskers players who entered the game scoring. This balanced attack meant no single Husker played more than 24 minutes, showcasing the team’s depth and bench strength.

South Carolina State found some rhythm in the second half, with Jordan Simpson leading their scoring with 17 points. Michael Teal and Raquan Brown also reached double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Looking ahead, Nebraska is set to wrap up its three-game homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when they face a challenging matchup against Indiana at 8 p.m. (CT). The game promises to be another thrilling encounter and will be aired on BTN and available on the Huskers Radio Network.
