Huskers Come Up Short Against Badgers

Lincoln, Neb. — The Nebraska men’s tennis team (0-7, 0-7 Big Ten) lost at home to the Wisconsin Badgers (2-6, 2-5 Big Ten), 2-5 on Sunday at the Dillon Tennis Center.

In doubles competition, sophomore Shunya Maruyama and junior William Gleason won a thrilling matchup against Robin Parts and Jared Pratt in the No. 2 spot, 7-6 (4). Juniors Victor Moreno Lozano and Brandon Perez fell short to Tim Dzhurinskiy/Gabriel Huber, 3-6, at the No. 1 spot. In the deciding No. 3 matchup, sophomore Albert Sprlak-Puk and junior Patrick Cacciatore forced the match to a tiebreak, but fell 6-7 (8), with the Badgers winning the doubles point. 

To start off singles play, Maruyama continued his weekend success with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wisconsin’s Robin Parts, at No. 4. Maruyama is now 5-5 on the season and in Big Ten play. At the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, Moreno and Perez both lost tough matches in straight sets. Clinching the overall match win for Wisconsin was Jared Pratt outlasting Sprlak-Puk in a three-set win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Getting his first win of the season overall and in conference play was Gleason in the No. 5 spot, defeating Jesper Freimuth, 7-6 (10), 6-2. Finishing up singles play at No. 6, Cacciatore dropped a three-set match to Mihailo Popovic, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6.  

Up next, the Huskers will stay home to matchup with Michigan State on Friday at 2:00 p.m. CT at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln.
