Husker Trio Named Golfers to Watch



Nebraska’s Caleb Badura, Mark Foelbaek and Tom Westenberger were mentioned among the Big Ten’s top golfers when the conference announced its annual list of preseason honorees on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Badura, a senior from Aurora, Nebraska, joined Foelback as Nebraska’s top individual finishers at the 2021 Big Ten Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. Badura produced his best performance of the season at Git-R-Done Husker Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln when he fired a career-best three-round score of 213 (E), including a career-best 68 (-3) in the second round. He closed his second season at Nebraska with a 74.33 stroke average over six competitive rounds, while also earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors. During the summer of 2021, Badura set the Nebraska Amateur Championship record with a 63 (-9) in the third round at Lochland Country Club in Hastings.

Foelbaek, a senior from Jelling, Denmark, joined Badura in making a strong finish to the 2021 spring season. Foelbaek tied Badura for fifth at the Git-R-Done Husker Invitational with a three-round total of 213, which included a career-best 67 (-4) in the final round. Foelbaek, who was an NJCAA Division I PING All-American at Ranger (Texas) College in 2019, was also a star academically for Nebraska last season. An Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award winner, Foelback was also a Big Ten Distingusihed Scholar and an Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2021.

Westenberger, a senior from Wuppertal, Germany, rounds out the Huskers to watch after posting Nebraska’s strongest 2021 season. He posted a 75.27 stroke average while playing all 15 rounds for the Big Red in 2021. His season included a pair of top-10 individual finishes, tying for sixth with a career-best 217 at the Aggie Invitational (April 9-11), after tying for seventh at the Hoosier Collegiate (April 3-4). A star in the classroom, Westenberger was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of American. The economics major was also an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and an Academic All-Big Ten choice.

First-year head coach Brett Balak and the Huskers open their 2021 fall campaign by traveling to the Duke/Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, North Carolina (Sept. 11-12).
