Huber/Lozano Advance To The Semis At ITAs

Lincoln Neb. – Nebraska men’s tennis continued its strong outing at the ITA Regionals, with seniors Dario Huber and Victor Moreno Lozano advancing to the final four in doubles competition.

The duo managed to stave off the efforts of Bucan and Zavala of Arkansas in the round of 16, defeating them 8-6. They advanced to the quarterfinals where they came back and defeated Hammond and Verboven of Oklahoma State. After dropping the first set 4-6, they won the second set 7-5. In the tiebreak third set, Huber and Lozano blanked the Cowboys as they won 10-0. Both will compete in the semifinals tomorrow morning.

Sophomore Rudra Dixit and freshman Roni Hietaranta won their round of 16 match in duos play, before falling in the quarterfinals to Manuel and Burdet of Arkansas 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

In the round of 8 for the main draw, senior William Gleason lost narrowly to the tournament’s top-ranked seed Beiler from Oklahoma. After dropping the first set 6-4, he battled back to take the second set 6-3. In the final set, Gleason fought hard but ultimately fell short 6-4 and was eliminated from the main singles draw. Beiler is ranked No. 46 in the ITA preseason polls. 

Two Nebraska players won in extra matches, with seniors Patrick Cacciatore and Huber coming out victorious.

Play will start tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the semifinals of the doubles and consolation brackets at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The semifinals of the singles main draw will begin at 12:00 p.m. Fans can follow along on Twitter, or view the bracket here.
