Harris Repeats as B1G Javelin Champion

MINNEAPOLIS – Nebraska sophomore Maddie Harris won the Big Ten javelin title for the second straight year to lead the Nebraska track and field team on Friday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at the University of Minnesota Track & Field Stadium.

Harris posted a school-record throw of 189-11 (57.90m) on her second attempt to defend her gold medal from last year. Her mark ranks third in the NCAA this season. Harris’ title gives the Husker women six out of the last eight Big Ten javelin titles dating back to 2014. But she’s the first Husker woman to repeat as a conference javelin champion since Kayla Wilkinson in the Big 12 in 2005 and 2006. Fellow Husker Mirta Kulisic earned the silver medal with a throw of 169-10 (51.77m), her second Big Ten javelin medal in as many years.

Alex Talley led the Husker men on Friday with a fourth-place finish in the men’s hammer throw. Already the school-record holder in the event, Talley launched the hammer 223-2 (68.03m) to finish just outside a medal spot.

After day one, the Husker women have 25 points and are in second place, while the men’s team scored five points and are in seventh place.

The NU women collected all 25 team points from the women’s javelin. In addition to 10 from Harris and eight from Kulisic, Madison Lueger and Brooklyn Miller both scored in the top eight for the Big Red. Lueger threw the javelin 150-8 (45.92m) to finish in fifth place. Miller had a best throw of 142-5 (43.41m) to finish sixth.

On the track, Cory Berg led the Huskers with a 10th-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles in 51.96.

The multi-events started on Friday and will finish on Saturday. At the midway point of the men’s decathlon, Till Steinforth has 3,843 points and is in fourth place out of 11 competitors. Kolby Heinerikson stands in 10th place with 3,430 points. Steinforth set a personal best of 10.88 in the 100 meters and won the long jump event with a mark of 23-3 1/2 (7.10m). Heinerikson also had a PR in the 100 meters – 11.25.

In the women’s heptathlon, Kerrigan Myers is in eighth place out of 12 with 3,063 points heading into the final three events on Saturday. Myers posted a high jump personal best of 5-5 (1.65m) and a 200 meters PR of 26.13.
