Five Huskers Named CGA Regular-Season All-Americans



Five Nebraska men’s gymnasts were named Regular-Season All-Americans announced by the College Gymnastics Association on Thursday morning. The gymnasts are comprised of sophomore Taylor Christopulos, juniors Donte McKinney and Sam Phillips, and seniors Charlie Giles and Jake Bonnay.

Jake Bonnay, a native from Ontario, Canada, was named a regular-season All-American on floor for the third year in a row. Bonnay is currently ranked second in the NCAA on floor with a national qualifying average score of 14.140. Bonnay has claimed three event titles on floor this season, with a season-high of 14.50 scored against Air Force and Army on March 12.

Taylor Christopulos, a native from Layton, Utah, was also named a regular-season All-American on vault for a second consecutive year. Christopulos holds the seventh position overall in the NCAA on vault with a national qualifying average of 14.458. Christopulos has pocketed two event titles this season against Michigan on Jan. 29 and Ohio State on March 20, putting up a season-high record of 14.85 against Air Force and Army on March 12. 

Charlie Giles, a native from Lake Zurich, Illinois, was named a regular-season All-American on pommel horse and for a second time on vault. On pommel horse, Giles is ranked second in the NCAA with a national qualifying score of 13.821. The senior collected 4 event titles this season, notching a career-high score of 14.90 against Ohio State on March 20. On vault, Giles is currently ranked third in the NCAA with a national qualifying average of 14.607. Giles notched another career-high with a 15.05 against Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5. 

Sam Phillips, a native from Woodland Hills, California, was also named a regular-season All-American on two events including floor and high bar. Phillips is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA on floor, with a national qualifying average of 13.557. Phillips claimed two floor titles, scoring his season-high of 14.20 at Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 15. On high bar, Phillips is ranked seventh with a national qualifying average of 13.279, collecting 2 event titles against Air Force and Army on March 12, and Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5, where he put up a career-high of 14.10.

Donte McKinney, a native from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was named a regular-season All-American on high bar. McKinney is currently ranked eighth overall in the NCAA with a national qualifying average of 13.636. McKinney notched his season-high score of 13.95 at the home meet against Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5.

The Huskers return to competition April 15 for the qualifier round of the NCAA Championships in Norman, Okla. The meet is set to take place at 1 and 7 p.m. CT.
