>> Five Nebraska track and field student-athletes will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. at the Randal Tyson Track Center. Nebraska’s qualifiers are Papay Glaywulu (triple jump), Lishanna Ilves (long jump), George Kusche (mile), Burger Lambrechts Jr. (shot put) and Kevin Shubert (shot put). The top 16 individuals in each event qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
>> Live championship coverage will be streamed on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 14 on ESPNU. Live results can be found on the Huskers.com schedule page.
>> Lambrechts Jr. and Shubert will begin the meet for the Huskers in the shot put on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. Lishanna Ilves will compete in the long jump at 3:45 p.m. that day. On Friday, George Kusche will race in the mile semifinals at 2 p.m. The mile final is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. Finally, Papay Glaywulu will take part in the triple jump at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
>> Lambrechts Jr. and Kusche were both NCAA Indoor Championships qualifiers last year, but the meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Glaywulu was a 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier, finishing 16th in the triple jump as a freshman at Oklahoma. Shubert and Ilves are first-time NCAA Championships qualifiers.
Huskers at Nationals
>> Burger Lambrechts Jr. ranks tied for fifth nationally in the shot put after winning the Big Ten title with a personal-best throw of 67-4 3/4 (20.54m). His throw is the second-best in school history.
>> Papay Glaywulu was also a Big Ten champion, capturing the triple jump title. His personal-best jump of 53-6 1/4 (16.31m) at the Husker Triangular in January ranks eighth in the nation and is tied for the No. 4 jump in school history.
>> George Kusche, the Big Ten cross country champion, ran a school-record mile time of 3:57.74 at the B1G Indoor Invitational in February to qualify for the second year in a row. Kusche was the Big Ten runner-up in the mile by .01 seconds and he is the school-record holder in both the mile and the 3,000 meters (7:50.93).
>> Kevin Shubert, a Millard North grad, ranks 16th nationally in the shot put after his personal-best throw of 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in January. Shubert placed fourth in the event at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
>> Finally, Big Ten long jump champion Lishanna Ilves qualified for nationals with her Big Ten-winning jump of 20-9 1/4 (6.33m), which tied her for 16th in the nation. Ilves, a true freshman, ranks tied for seventh in school history in the event.
>> The NU men were fourth and the women were sixth at this year’s Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Papay Glaywulu (triple jump) and Burger Lambrechts Jr. (shot put) were champions on the men’s side, while Lishanna Ilves (long jump) and Ieva Turke (triple jump) won titles on the women’s side.
>> The Huskers have four athletes who have achieved USTFCCCA All-America indoor honors in their NU careers. George Kusche was an All-American in the mile and 3,000 meters last indoor season, and he is the school-record holder in both events. Burger Lambrechts Jr. and Kristina Insingo were both named All-Americans last year after qualifying for indoor nationals in the shot put. Mayson Conner was a 2019 first-team All-American in the high jump after finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
