Duan, Vavrova Lead Huskers at Nebraska Open

Newcomers Alice Duan and Michaela Vavrova headlined several strong performances by the Husker women’s golf team at the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open in Columbus over the weekend.

Duan, a graduate transfer from Reno, Nev., finished as the tournament’s top female amateur in a 95-player field that included 20 male professionals making the cut after two rounds. Duan finished with a three-round total of 222 (73-75-74) on the 6,599-yard layout at the Elks Country Club.

While Duan earned the title as the Low Women’s Amateur, Vavrova took second among females in the event. The freshman from Bojnice, Slovakia closed with a three-round total of 225 (74-74-77) and joined Duan as the only women to make the cut and advance to Sunday’s final round.

Several other Huskers played solid golf on the first two days of the tournament. Senior Kate Smith just missed the cut, carding rounds of 76 and 75 to finish at 151 (+7). Sophomore Leah Herzog added a 152 (76-76) over two rounds from the men’s tees on the championship course.

Senior Noor Ahmed (76-78) and junior Kirsten Baete (76-78) added identical scores of 154 (+10) over 36 holes, while sophomore Nicole Hansen (+13), junior Megan Whittaker (+14), junior Vanessa Bouvet (+15) and senior Jessica Haraden (+19) rounded out the Husker contingent.
