Canales Signs with Huskers – University of Nebraska

Nebraska men’s golf coach Brett Balak announced the signing of Nicholas Canales as the fifth member of Balak’s first Husker recruiting class on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
 
“Nicholas is an excellent player and has proven he can win at a high level with his victory at the AJGA UHY St. Louis Junior,” Balak said. “He is a high character kid, excellent student and extremely diligent with how hard he works on his golf game to improve. Coach Minzel and I are very happy to have Nicholas join the Cornhusker family.”
 
Canales is set to join Quinn Yost (New Mexico), Davis Johnson (Minnesota), Evan McDermott (Michigan) and Grant Jabenis (Nebraska) in bringing talent and depth to the Husker men’s golf program in 2022-23.
 
Canales, a senior from La Porte, Texas notched the biggest win of his young career in July at the AJGA UHY St. Louis Junior. He fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to secure the title, after carding a 73 (+1) in the first round and a one-under 71 in the second round. His final round featured six birdies to win the event. 
 
As a junior at La Porte High School, Canales tied for eighth at the state tournament with a 147 (+1).
 
In July of 2021, Canales tied for second at the Cilcgear STPGA Challenge at Cypresswood Golf Club with a 74 (+2) in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second.
 
In October of 2021, Canales tied for third at the Bay Forest Junior Championship after firing a 5-under-par 67 in the opening round, before closing with a 75 (+3).
