Ajay Allen latest Nebraska football player to enter transfer portal

“There’s no excuse for fumbles — I can live with an interception here or there — and it will result in you not playing, to be quite honest,” coach Matt Rhule said after the spring game. “We’re not here to play in fear — it’s not one time and you’re done — but you have to have the ability to protect the football.”

A four-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, Allen switched from TCU to NU, following then-position coach Bryan Applewhite. Allen had started to receive more carries — 11 in the OU game — before injuring his knee.

Should Allen remain in the portal, NU has four returning scholarship running backs in Anthony Grant, Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson, all of whom split time on the Red team, and Emmett Johnson. The Huskers add 2023 signee Kwinten Ives to the mix in late May.

Unofficial totals show Nebraska still three above the 85-scholarship limit as the portal closed Sunday evening, but Rhule, as a first-year coach, retains the right to remove players from the active scholarship while paying for their tuition and board.

Allen’s Sunday departure follows that of Jalil Martin, who, according to media reports, also entered the portal. Also a 2022 recruit, the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder did not play last season and toggled between receiver and defensive back during spring camp.
