Westenberger Leads Huskers in Texas



College Station, Texas Tom Westenberger shot a second-round 73 to close the day in a tie for eighth at 144 through 36 holes at the Aggie Invitational on Saturday.

Westenberger (Wuppertal, Germany) played solid golf through the round for the second straight day to lead the Huskers on the 7,227-yard, par-72 layout at the Traditions Golf Club. Westenberger heads into Sunday’s final round six shots behind tournament leader Sam Bennett from Texas A&M. Bennett added a 70 to his opening-round 68 to sit at six-under-par. Bennett owns a three-shot lead over Houston’s Alexander Francis and Pierceson Coody from Texas, who are tied in second at 141 (-3).

With Westenberger leading the way, the Huskers finished with a team score of 301 in the second round. Nebraska heads to Sunday’s final round in ninth place at 599 in the strong 17-team field at Texas A&M that includes 11 teams ranked among the top 75 in the nation. The Huskers are just one stroke back of No. 46 Houston and No. 60 North Texas, which are tied for seventh at 598. The Big Red sit two strokes ahead of No. 56 Kansas (601), four shots up on No. 33 UTSA (603) and 11 strokes ahead of No. 68 UNLV (609).

No. 5 Texas remained on top of the team standings at 575, three strokes ahead of No. 1 Oklahoma (578) and seven shots ahead of the hosts from No. 12 Texas A&M (582).

Jack Lundin, who opened the tournament with a one-under 71 on Friday, settled in after a challenging front-nine in the second round to close the day with a 77. The freshman from Sioux Falls, S.D., enters the tournament’s final 18 holes in a tie for 22nd at 148 (+4). 

Redshirt freshman Jeremy Sisson (Skaneateles, N.Y.) notched Nebraska’s second-best round of the day with a 75 (+3) to climb 19 spots up the leader board into a tie for 53rd individually at 154. Sophomore Will Marshall (Elburn, Ill.) added Nebraska’s third-best round with a 76 (+4) on Saturday and heads to the final round in a tie for 50th (153) in the 96-player field.

Branden Meyer rounded out the Husker contingent with a 78 on Saturday. After a slow start to the second round, Meyer played the final 12 holes at one-over-par.

Sunday’s final round at the Aggie Invitational is set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. (CT) with live scoring available from GolfStat.
