Tom Westenberger put together a top-25 individual finish to lead the Nebraska men’s golf team to a ninth-place showing at the 13-team Stitch Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday.
Westenberger, a senior from Wuppertal, Germany, produced a final-round 74 (+2) on the 7,287-yard layout to close with a team-best 54-hole total of 222 (+6) to tie for 24th in the 84-player field.
Fellow senior Mark Foelbaek fired Nebraska’s best round on Saturday with a 71 (-1) to add a 35th-place showing at 224 (+8) over three rounds.
Senior Branden Meyer matched Westenberger’s 74 for the Huskers in the final round and closed with a 54-hole score of 225 (-9) in a tie for 36th, right behind Foelbaek.
Caleb Badura managed Nebraska’s fourth score of Saturday’s final round with an 80, as the Huskers ended the tournament with a 299 over the last 18 holes. NU’s three-round score of 897 allowed the Huskers to finish ahead of Davidson (899), Campbell (902), Jacksonville State (911) and Air Force (983).
Duke won the team title with a three-round team score of 861 (-3), three strokes ahead of the hosts from North Carolina State and Notre Dame (864). Duke’s Quinn Riley took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 212 (-4), one stroke ahead of NC State’s Easton Paxton and Maximilian Steinlechner and Notre Dame’s Taichi Kho and Davis Chatfield, who all finished in a four-way tie for second at 213 (-3).
Young Husker golfers Reed Malleck and Gentry Scheve both performed well over the first 36 holes, before struggling in the final round. Malleck, who was competing as an individual outside the Husker lineup, entered the final round in the top 20 in the individual standings before settling for an 80 to tie for 40th overall at 226 (+10). Malleck opened the tournament with a 71 (-1) on Friday.
Scheve played solid golf with rounds of 74 and 75, including a hole-in-one on No. 6 (par-3, 163 yards) in Friday’s opening round. He settled for an 82 in the Saturday’s final round to tie for 60th at 231.
The Huskers return to action next weekend at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, which begins on Saturday, April 16.
