Tucson, Ariz. – Michaela Vavrova fired a career-best 70 (-2) in the second round to close the first 36 holes in a tie for 20th to lead the Nebraska women’s golf team at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on Monday.
Vavrova, a freshman from Bojnice, Slovakia, charged up the individual leaderboard with one of the 10 rounds better than par among the 80 golfers over Monday’s second round.
Vavrova opened the day with a 76 (+4) on the 6,627-yard, par-72 layout of the Sewailo Golf Club. Tied for 47th after the first round, Vavrova’s 70 allowed her to close the day at 146 (+2) in a tie for 20th.
Husker senior Kate Smith added rounds of 77 and 73 to end the tournament’s first day in a tie for 38th at 150 (+6). Redshirt junior Kirsten Baete contributed rounds of 77 and 79 to sit in a tie for 62nd at 156, while graduate transfer Alice Duan managed rounds of 77 and 82 to close the first 36 holes in a tie for 70th at 159.
Nebraska sits in 14th (307-304-611) in the 16-team field and will need a strong final round on Tuesday to climb the leaderboard. Texas surged to the team lead with an impressive 562 (275-287) to sit at 14-under-par. The Longhorns own an eight-stroke lead over No. 3 USC (279-291-570) at six-under-par, while Oklahoma State is within striking distance in third place at 573 (-2).
USC’s Allisen Corpuz heads the individual leaderboard through 36 holes at 137 (-7), clinging to a one-shot lead over Sara Kouskova from Texas at 138 (-6), while her Longhorn teammate Kaitlyn Papp is right behind in third at 139 (-5).
Tuesday’s final round begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT) with live scoring provided by GolfStat.com.
